Ice Fishing

For cub scouts this week all the cub scouts headed down to a lake to go ice fishing. I was not so sure about this activity, considering that we were going to be walking on frozen water. What if it gave way and we fell in? The river behind my house was showing water why would this be any different? If you build a fire on the ice won't that make it weaker? Those were just a few of the questions running around in my head when the other leaders suggest this activity. But they all reassured me that it would be safe.
All day I went back and forth on going. Kallie wanted to go to her last Activity Days activity, so that meant that would have to bring the two younger girls with me to fishing - that made me nervous. But I also knew that this would be the only chance Jaron would have to try this activity because I don't have the equipment to do this.
The only item you had to bring was a fishing pole. We didn't have one. So I ran to the store to grab one. The was an adventure in itself - but I finally made it out of the store with a pole about 12 inches long (looks like a baby pole). We headed to the lake (not a river so the water stays still and is not making the ice un-thaw like the river behind our house.) We got into our winter clothes and waddled to the group so we wouldn't slip on the ice. The leaders with augers had made enough holes so each boy could have one. Here Jaron is sitting and fishing at his hole. Waiting...
I had the girls standing right next to me and asked them not to move.  A family that had come with their cub scouts had some extra poles and let them fish at and with their poles. Here is Karlee, she was getting kinda bored that her pole was not doing anything, plus she couldn't really hold her pole real well with her mittens on.
And Kelsie my mini fisherman it looks like the pole was the right size for her. She like to bob the line in the water. Which is what you are supposed to do, but I don't think that she had it far enough down. We were only there for forty-five mintues before we needed to go pick up Kallie. The kids were sad that they didn't catch anything but it was their first time maybe next time. Oh and the ice was really thick so it wouldn't give way. It was about 3 feet thick. But I am still unsure about having a fire on top of the ice on the lake.
